Slow Flowers Revisited for Week 52
In 2023, I devoted a full year to revisiting my 52-week project that became a book called Slow Flowers, published in 2013. Each week, I reinterpreted the corresponding original design to share with you.
When it came to Week 52, which featured an amaryllis arrangement, I couldn’t find amaryllis plants in bloom. So, here we are, one full year later (it’s December 24, 2024), and I’m happy to share a new amaryllis design.
This design involves eight potted plants, including two glorious amaryllis and six groupings of paperwhite bulbs. After picking these up at Carpinito’s Farm Stand, I repotted the plants into clay and vintage ceramic pots, topped them with moss, and arranged the pots in a vintage wood caddy (a metal tray is inside to catch any excess water runoff).
As the paperwhites started to (inevitably) flop over, I clipped off the stems and arranged them in bud vases around my dining table — ensuring longer enjoyment and that lovely fragrance!
When I created this design for Slow Flowers, I planted two amaryllis bulbs in a glass serving bowl, making sure that the bulbs’ necks and shoulders emerged above the soil’s surface. Rather than the moss that I used for my 2024 design, I added vintage metallic glass ornaments as my soil-topper, giving the amaryllises some holiday sparkle.
That’s it! It only took a year for me to find the amaryllis I liked for a NEW version of the original design!
